COMMON OPAL

St. Austell, Cornwall

Unlike precious opal, common opal does not show a play of colours. It is nevertheless an interesting stone with several varieties that have been used as gemstones. This is a good example from a Cornish china clay pit.

Specimens of common opal from the granite in the Cornish china clay pits are often translucent and/or milky with an attractive resinous (glass-like) lustre.
