COLOURED FLINT

Isle of Sheppey, Kent

Fresh flint nodules from the chalk are black in colour with a white rind or cortex. However, flint is very slightly porous and when it is deposited in layers of gravel it can absorb chemical compounds in the groundwater. This can result in flints with colours such as yellow, orange, brown and even red.

This colourful flint still has some of the original white cortex.
