COLLECTION OF SMALL FOSSIL SPONGES PRESERVED IN FLINT - Norfolk
« backCOLLECTION OF OVER 35 SMALL FOSSIL SPONGES PRESERVED IN FLINT
Porosphaera globularis
80 million years old
Upper Chalk. Norfolk Coast
The fossil sponge Porosphaera globularis is responsible for the small spherical flints that are found across Norfolk and elsewhere. They often have a dimple or depression on their surface, giving away that there is a fossil sponge inside. There is some evidence that these fossils were used as beads for necklaces in the late Palaeolithic period.
These fossils are from several locations on the Norfolk coast. They are from an old collection and are presented in a plastic display box.
