COLLECTION OF FOSSIL CRINOID STEMS FROM THE LONDON CLAY
50 million years old
London Clay
Aveley, Thurrock, Essex
A collection of fossil crinoid stems in a box with a glass lid. They are from an old collection. Collected in 1968 from the Aveley clay pits. None of these pits are now in existence.
Crinoids (also called sea lilies) look like plants but they are marine animals related to starfish and sea urchins. Most species were attached to the seafloor by a stalk but some were free-swimming. The mouth was surrounded by numerous feeding arms. Pieces of the stalk, or stem, is usually all that remains of them.
