COLLECTION OF
FIVE ‘APACHE TEARS’
(volcanic glass)

Arizona, USA

‘Apache tears' are round black nodules of obsidian (volcanic glass), which are found in parts of the Western United States in a white volcanic rock called perlite.

Perlite was formed by obsidian ‘hydrating’ as a result of water infiltrating the stone along curved onion-like fractures.  Over time almost all the obsidian was converted to perlite except for the cores which remained as round nodules of fresh obsidian.

The name is said to derive from a legend of the Apache tribe that tells how the tears of the wives of slaughtered Apache warriors were turned to stone.
