Lava from the 1875 eruption of Vesuvius, with a 19th century coin pressed into the lava while it was molten

Vesuvius, Italy

The coin is Italian and from the reign of Victor Emmanuel II who reigned from 1861 to 1878.  The date of the coin (which is on the underside) is from the 1860s and from the wear on the coin the most likely eruption was that of 1875 -1906.

During the 19th century it was common for these souvenirs to be produced for wealthy visitors who climbed the mountain during volcanic eruptions.

A fascinating item. Presented in a lidded gift box.
