COAL

The war history of the coal industry

By W.H.B. Court

History of the Second World War - Civil Series (1951)

(Second hand copy in very good condition) (Ex university Library copy)

At the start of World War II, the UK was highly dependent on coal, not only to power ships and trains, but as the main source of energy for electricity generation. It was also used within households for cooking and heating.

It is a comprehensive account detailing the industry before the war and through the conflict and its aftermath, covering everything from Government policy down to domestic supplies and the conditions of mineworkers. Very comprehensive index.

The History of the Second World War is the official history of the British contribution to the war and was published by HMSO from 1949 until 1993. It was an immense project that was sub-divided into areas such as military, civil, medical etc.
