COAL MEASURES SANDSTONE
('YORK STONE')

Britannia Quarries, Morley, Leeds, Yorkshire

York Stone is a fine-grained sandstone laid down at a similar time to the vast tropical coal swamps, hence the name Coal Measures Sandstone.

The sand was washed down from the giant Caledonian mountain range, as high as the present-day Himalayas, which was formed as the separate tectonic plates on which England and Scotland were situated collided and were welded together. The roots of these mountains are now the mountains of eastern America, Scotland and Norway.

The sandstone is therefore literally the debris from the erosion of Caledonia, deposited during the Carboniferous period, around 320 million years ago. It is perfect as a paving stone, with fine laminations and sparkling flakes of mica.
