CIPOLLINO VERDE

Karystos, Euboea, Greece

Polished sample of this classic decorative marble

Cipollino verde is a beautiful marble that was used by the Greeks, and then extensively by the Romans, who thought that the swirling patterns resembled waves in the sea.

It was quarried on the southern end of the Greek island of Euboea but by the seventh century the quarries had been abandoned and the stone no longer worked. However, in the late nineteenth century, the fashion for Gothic Revival architecture led to the search for the sources of ancient stones and the Euboea quarries were reopened. This marble can now be seen in buildings all over Europe, an example being Westminster Cathedral in London.

Geologically, this marble was originally a Permian limestone that was metamorphosed and folded during the late Cretaceous and Tertiary periods. The green colour is due to veins of chlorite and epidote.
