CHRYSANTHEMUM STONE - China
« back'CHRYSANTHEMUM STONE'
Liuyang District, South China
These remarkable flower-like crystal groups from South China are popular with collectors and are known as 'Chrysanthemum stones'. They consist of radial aggregates of crystals, usually of calcite or celestite, in a dark grey limestone of Permian age.
The contrast of the white crystals with the grey limestone is striking enough, but unfortunately this has been accentuated by paint or ink to a greater or lesser degree on almost all the specimens.
From an old collection.
Size: approx. 7.5 x 6 x 2.5 centimetres
Weight: 148 grams
