CHIASTOLITE ('CROSS STONE')
Hunan, China
Chiastolite is a variety of the mineral andalusite. It is noted for distinctive black, cross-shaped inclusions, the presence of which has led to the mineral being used as a gemstone.
The cross is most probably caused by selective attachment of impurities (which mostly consist of graphite) at the rapidly growing corners of andalusite crystals.
It has been known since the 16th century, and called 'lapis crucifer' (cross stone) in Latin texts. It was popular with religious pilgrims in Europe.
This crystal has been cut and polished to reveal the 'chiastolite cross'.
