CHALCEDONY

Cut and polished

Scurdie Ness, near Montrose, Tayside, Scotland

A colourful example of chalcedony from a classic Scottish agate locality. Agate is a variety of chalcedony. The name agate is usually reserved for the banded variety of chalcedony.

The chalcedony and agate pebbles from the east coast of Scotland are World-renowned and have been popular with collectors since at least the 17th Century. They occur in cavities in andesite lava which was erupted from violent volcanic eruptions in the early Devonian period, about 410 million years ago.
