CAVANSITE CRYSTALS

Beautiful blue crystal aggregates in basalt lava

Poona District, Maharashtra State, India

In Maharashtra State in western India quarries produce crystals of various minerals that occur lining large hollow ‘geodes’.  These were formerly gas bubbles in 65 million year old basalt lava that now forms the giant Deccan lava plateau.

This plateau is one of the largest volcanic provinces in the world.  The Deccan eruptions at the end of the Cretaceous period are considered by scientists to be partly, if not solely responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Cavansite is one of many minerals found in the lavas but it is notable because of its remakable colour.
