CAST OF A 'MASS MORTALITY'
SLAB OF TRILOBITES FROM
JINCE, CZECH REPUBLIC

Ellipsocephalus hoffi

510 million years old
Jince Formation (Cambrian Period)

(second hand item)

An impressive cast, in plaster, of an assemblage of about twenty trilobites from the classic Eastern European site of Jince in Bohemia. Eight of the trilobites are complete internal moulds and the remainder are incomplete moults, some of which are external moulds. Sizes range up to 22mm by 14mm.

The gathering of large numbers of trilobites together like this is typical of this species: they probably grouped together to moult. Such 'mass mortality' slabs indicate rapid burial.

This reproduction was cast by Stuart Baldwin's company Educational Palaeontological Reproductions in the 1980s.

Please note that the photographs are taken using oblique lighting to make the fossils easier to see.
