CARRARA MARBLE

Apuan Alps, Northern Italy

The white marbles of Tuscany are famous throughout the world and the best known of these is Carrara Marble.

Used during the Italian Renaissance, the quarries in the Apuan Alps near the city of Carrara produced the fine, white marble that was used by Michelangelo for his larger works, including the famous David.

Carrara marble is a Triassic or early Jurassic limestone that was metamorphosed during the Tertiary period when the Alpine chain was formed.
