CANYON DIABLO METEORITE
(Iron meteorite)

Small fragment

Fell about 50,000 years ago

Meteor Crater, Arizona, USA

About 50,000 years ago, a huge nickel-iron meteorite, travelling about 15 kilometres per second, struck Arizona with an explosive force greater than 20 million tonnes of TNT.

The meteorite, estimated to have been about 50 metres across and weighing several hundred thousand tonnes, left a crater 1.2 kilometres in diameter. The crater, known as Barringer Crater, is the best preserved meteorite crater on Earth.

Most of the meteorite vaporised on impact but many fragments have been recovered from the nearby desert and are named after Canyon Diablo, a canyon to the west.

This piece is from an old collection. It is provided in a display box with a glass lid and a comprehensive label.
