CALAMITES

Branch of a prehistoric tree preserved as a natural sandstone cast

300 million years old

Wigan, Lancashire

Calamites was a giant tree closely related to living horsetails. They grew to a height of up to 18 metres. They lived during the Carboniferous period and were a large part of the tropical Coal Measures forests.

They had tapered, jointed trunks which were hollow in life and frequently became filled with sediment on burial to produce natural fossilised casts.
