BRECCIATED MOOKAITE

Mooka Creek, Kennedy Range,
Western Australia

An unusual slice of polished mookaite. It is 'brecciated', in other words has been naturally broken into angular fragments and re-cemented by quartz. It has been polished on one side.

The gemstone Mookaite is named after the site in Australia where it occurs.  It is often referred to as a variety of jasper but it is actually a siltstone of Cretaceous age that has been turned into quartz (silica), and is technically known as a ‘porcelanite’ from its resemblance to unglazed porcelain.

Caution: Just like flint, broken pieces of mookaite can have very sharp edges.
