Mica is a remarkable mineral. Due to weaknesses between the layers of atoms it splits easily in one direction - a property known as cleavage - and continued splitting creates thin, flexible sheets.
Mica has had hundreds of uses due to its unique electrical and thermal insulating properties but it has been principally used in the electrical industries. The transparent variety of mica is known as muscovite and the black variety biotite. Mica is a common constituent of rocks, particularly granite.
