BAUXITE
Bédarieux, Languedoc, France
A very good specimen of bauxite from an old collection.
Bauxite is a sedimentary rock with a relatively high aluminium content and is the world's main source of aluminium. It is formed by the weathering of rocks and the concentration of aluminium compounds.
This bauxite is of Cretaceous age. It contains a lot of iron in the form of hematite, giving it a red colour.
