BAUXITE

Rovinj, Istria, Croatia

Bauxite is a sedimentary rock with a relatively high aluminium content and is the world's main source of aluminium. It is formed by the weathering of rocks and the concentration of aluminium compounds.

The bauxite of Croatia is of Jurassic age, about 150 million years old, and formed under humid, tropical weathering conditions. It contains a lot of iron in the form of hematite, giving it a red colour.

This sample is from an old collection.
