BARITE SAND CONCRETION

Western Sahara Desert,
Morocco

A fascinating barite concretion from Morocco. A very good example.

Like desert roses formed of gypsum, these concretions appear to have been formed by groundwater precipitating barite crystals between the sand grains in concentric patterns.

These concretions are frequently marketed as stromatolites (fossils of algal colonies) but when cut and polished they show no internal structure.
