BARITE (‘OAKSTONE’)

Arbor Low, Middleton, Derbyshire

Oakstone is a dark brown, pseudo-stalactitic variety of barite that was first found at Arbor Low in 1832.

Although a rare stone it was much used for ornamental purposes in the 19th century, usually inlaid with other Derbyshire stones to make fine table tops.

This is a small, but typical piece which has been polished on one side.
