« backAZURITE/MALACHITE IN GRANITE (‘K2 STONE’)
A 'palm stone' - polished on all sides
From the foothills of K2,
Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
Spherical areas of blue or green azurite/malachite (copper carbonate) within fine-grained granite. This extremely unusual rock is commonly called ’K2 stone’ because it is found near K2, the second highest mountain in the world. It is also erroneously called ‘K2 jasper’, but it is a granite, not a jasper.

It is thought that the coloured orbs within the granite are the result of concentrations of azurite and malachite gradually leaching outwards from a central point. The granite consists of feldspar, quartz and mica and the azurite and malachite has permeated through the pale feldspar crystals like a dye.
