AZURITE IN GRANITE (‘K2 STONE’)

Natural sample

From the foothills of K2,
Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

Spherical areas of blue azurite (copper carbonate) within fine-grained granite. This extremely unusual rock is commonly called ’K2 stone’ because it is found near K2, the second highest mountain in the world. It is also erroneously called ‘K2 jasper’, but it is a granite, not a jasper.

It is thought that the coloured orbs within the granite are the result of concentrations of azurite gradually leaching outwards from a central point. The granite consists of feldspar, quartz and mica and the azurite has permeated through the pale feldspar crystals like a dye. Sometimes tiny green flecks of malachite (another copper carbonate) also occur.
