ATLAS VERTEBRA OF A WOOLLY RHINOCEROS

About 40,000 years old

Thames terrace gravels

Abingdon, Oxfordshire

The woolly rhinoceros is an extinct species of rhinoceros that was common in Europe and Siberia during the Ice Age. It had thick, long fur, small ears and short legs.

This is the 'atlas' or first neck vertebra. There is only one of these bones in the entire skeleton.

It is not complete but a nice example.
