Aswan Granite Quarries, Aswan, Egypt
A specimen of coarse-grained granite from the ancient Egyptian granite quarries close to the banks of the Nile. The granite consists of quartz, orthoclase, plagioclase, biotite mica and hornblende. These quarries supplied the granite for obelisks, one of which is ‘Cleopatra’s Needle’ in London.
This sample was collected from debris in the quarries near the unfinished obelisk many decades ago and is from an old collection. The quarries are now a World Heritage Site and collecting samples is no longer permitted.
It is contained in a vintage glass museum display box. The box has some minor wear.
