ASTEROID IMPACT BRECCIA (164 grams) - Dhala Impact Structure, India
« backOver two billion years old
This rock, known as an impact breccia, or suevite, consists of pulverised rock created by the immense pressures and temperatures associated with the impact of a giant asteroid. It shows evidence of the violence of the event.
It is from the highly eroded, 11 kilometre diameter Dhala Impact Structure in India, which is the third oldest impact structure on Earth, estimated to be between 2.44 and 2.24 billion years old.
A lovely example of impact breccia.
