Greenstone Belt, South Africa
Archean butterstone, sometimes called African jade, is an ancient rock formed during the Archean Eon, over 2.5 billion years ago. The Archean is the second of the four geological eons of Earth's history, a time when the continents were first forming.
These rocks contain a variety of micro fossils such as the microbial mats known as stromatolites, which are thought to represent the beginnings of life on Earth.
