APOPHYLLITE CRYSTALS

Moonen Bay,
Isle of Skye, Scotland

Apophyllite crystals with brown gyrolite crystals in a cavity in basalt lava. From a section of the coast of Skye that has become famous for mineral specimens from the beaches beneath towering cliffs.

Apophyllite forms attractive crystals and usually occurs in cavities in basalt lava. The cavities were originally large air bubbles when the lava was molten during a period of intense volcanic activity in western Scotland about 50 million years ago.
