APOPHYLLITE CRYSTALS
with pink stilbite crystal
Lining part of a natural geode
Poona District,
Maharashtra State, India
In Maharashtra State in western India quarries produce crystals of various minerals that occur lining large hollow ‘geodes’. These were formerly gas bubbles in 65 million year old basalt lava that now forms the giant Deccan lava plateau. This lava plateau is one of the largest volcanic provinces in the world.
The catastrophic Deccan eruptions at the end of the Cretaceous period are considered by scientists to be partly, if not solely responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs.
