LITHOGRAPHIC LIMESTONE PRINTING PLATE

Antique printing plate of lithographic limestone from Bavaria

Lithography (literally meaning 'stone' and 'writing') is a printing process that relies on the mutual repulsion of oil and water. The process was invented in Germany in 1796 using the extremely fine-grained Jurassic limestone from around the town of Solnhofen in Bavaria.

An image is drawn on the surface of a stone plate with an oil-based medium. A gum solution is then applied which penetrates the stone except where the image is drawn. The gum solution, when wet, repels the printing ink but the oiled image does not. When the stone and paper are run through a press the ink is transferred from the stone to the paper, resulting in a perfect printed image. The image on the stone must be reversed to achieve a positive image on paper.  The stone printing plate could be used over and over again allowing much longer and more detailed print runs than the older methods of printing.

This is an unusual example of an 'unused' printing plate - the extremely smooth faces are blank with no images. Its precise age is unknown. It has minor scratches on the surfaces but that is to be expected. An unusual item.
