ANTHRACITE

A lustrous example of anthracite which does not soil the fingers

Anthracite is the highest rank of coal with up to 98% carbon. Harder than any other type of coal it does not soil the fingers when touched, has a high lustre and is a very attractive rock.

Coal is a remarkable material; familiar to everyone a few decades ago but now almost unknown to the modern generation. This piece is from the Carboniferous period and is 300 million years old.

Anthracite accounts for only 1% of global coal reserves and is now mined in only a few countries. It is similar to jet and has even been used as a jet imitation.
