Andesite is a volcanic lava typical of volcanoes above subduction zones. It is named after the Andes mountains. This example contains lustrous black hornblende crystals.
Because the lavas cooled rapidly at the surface, they are composed of tiny crystals, but occasionally they also contain larger crystals which began forming within the magma as it was cooling at depth.
This specimen was formerly part of a university collection.
