ANALCITE CRYSTALS

Croft Quarry, Croft, Leicestershire

Distinctive, colourless crystals of analcite from the well-known Croft Quarry.

This huge quarry works an igneous rock called diorite which solidified from liquid magma in the Ordovician period. Thereafter, hot water passing through the rock created veins and cavities which were subsequently filled with crystal of minerals called zeolites. The most common of these is analcite for which the quarry is famous.

This specimen was collected in the 1990s and is from an old collection.
