AMETHYST QUARTZ
Part of a large natural geode

Rio Grand do Sul, Brazil

In Rio Grand do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, and in adjacent Uruguay, quarries produce amethyst crystals that occur lining large hollow ‘geodes’.  These were formerly gas bubbles in 130 million year old basalt lava that now forms the giant Paraná lava plateau.

The back is a natural green colour where it was in contact with the basalt rock.
 
Please note:  The colour of amethyst has been known to gradually fade if exposed to bright light, and so exposure to direct sunlight is not recommended. However, If displayed in indirect, low-level lighting the colour will last a lifetime.  See the following article for more information:
