AMETHYST QUARTZ
A large natural geode
Rio Grand do Sul, Brazil
In Rio Grand do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, and in adjacent Uruguay, quarries produce amethyst crystals that occur lining large hollow ‘geodes’. These were formerly gas bubbles in 130 million year old basalt lava that now forms the giant Paraná lava plateau.
This is a beautiful piece but is large and very heavy. The back is an attractive natural green colour where it was in contact with the basalt rock. Some rock is still attached which makes this an educational piece. Also, many of the crystals on this specimen have beautiful tufts of golden, needle-like goethite crystals inside.
It is completely natural and exactly as found. Most of the amethyst geodes for sale nowadays have had the rear surface painted and they are often set in painted concrete so that they stand up for display.

However, If displayed in indirect, low-level lighting the colour will last a lifetime. See the following article for more information: www.mindat.org/article.php/905/Amethyst+Specimens |
