AMETHYST QUARTZ

A good example of amethyst, beautifully exhibiting the way geodes form in basalt rock.

In Rio Grand do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, and in adjacent Uruguay, quarries produce amethyst crystals that occur lining large hollow ‘geodes’.  These were formerly gas bubbles in 130 million year old basalt lava that now forms the giant Paraná lava plateau.


The back and base of this specimen has been cut flat so that it displays well.
 
Please note:  The colour of amethyst has been known to gradually fade if exposed to bright light, and so exposure to direct sunlight is not recommended. However, If displayed in indirect, low-level lighting the colour will last a lifetime.  See the following article for more information:
