AMETHYST CRYSTALS - Scotland

Beautiful pale amethyst from Scotland
Screel Hill, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland
Amethyst is rare in the UK but some localities have produced good crystals, especially in Scotland. This lovely group of amethyst crystals came from a temporary exposure in a forestry plantation near Castle Douglas, which has produced some fine specimens.
The amethyst is described as 'drusy', which refers to a coating of small crystals on a rock surface. The host rock is a greywacke of Silurian age, the crystals formed as a result of hot, silica-rich fluids emanating from a nearby igneous intrusion of granite in early Devonian times.
This is a very attractive specimen. The crystals sit on a piece of the host rock.
