ALUM BAY SAND PICTURE

Alum Bay, Isle of Wight

The art of creating pictures using coloured sand is known as Marmotinto, or more commonly sand painting. It originated in Europe, particularly Italy, where marble dust was usually used. The craft became popular in the early 19th century as the tourist industry began to develop on the Isle of Wight, particularly at Alum Bay where coloured sands were readily available in the cliffs.

An unusual collector's item. The scene shows the coastline from Alum Bay to the Needles. It is provided with a facility for hanging on a wall.
