Jade is the common name for a fine-grained rock which has been used for carving and as a gemstone for thousands of years.
The name jade usually refers to rocks made of jadeite or nephrite but it is also used to describe rocks consisting entirely of omphacite. Omphacite belongs to the pyroxene group of minerals, as does jadeite, the most valuable type of jade.
