ALNÖITE BRECCIA

Alnö, Gulf of Bothnia, Sweden

Alnöite is a rare, intrusive, igneous rock known as a carbonatite. It contains conspicuous crystals of biotite mica, together with olivine and augite. It is named after its occurrence on Alnö Island, Sweden.

Carbonatite intrusions are of great importance for our understanding of crust and mantle processes. The Alnö volcano erupted about 590 million years old and is one of very few carbonatite igneous complexes in the world.

This is a lovely example that we acquired recently from an old collection.  It is best described as a breccia as it contains fragments of other rocks caught up in the magma and brought to the surface from a depth of up to 25 kilometres.
