ALNOITE

Alnö, Gulf of Bothnia, Sweden

Alnöite is a rare, intrusive, igneous rock known as a carbonatite. It contains conspicuous crystals of biotite mica, olivine and augite. It is named after its occurrence on Alnö Island, Sweden.

Carbonatite intrusions are of great importance for our understanding of crust and mantle processes. The Alnö volcano erupted about 590 million years old and is one of very few carbonatite igneous complexes in the world.

This is a good example from an old university collection.
