EGYPTIAN 'ALABASTER'

Polished cube paperweight
(second hand item)

Eastern Desert, Egypt

Egyptian alabaster is a creamy-white, banded variety of calcite that was deposited in cavities in limestone of Eocene age. It was quarried as early as 400 BC for bowls and pots for storing perfumes and oils. Later it was used for decoration and for statues. Small-scale extraction continues today.

Alabaster is the name used by archaeologists and the stone industry for varieties of the minerals calcite or gypsum that are readily used for carving because they are so soft. Geologists, however, only call the softer gypsum variety alabaster.
