Cut and polished section
Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
A beautiful, thick polished section of natural agate. It has 'islands' of agate (see photos) which makes it a lovely piece.
Agate is an extremely attractive variety of Quartz that slowly crystallised in concentric layers within gas bubbles inside basalt lava. Brazil produces the largest number of agates in the world and these come from the enormous 130 million year old Paraná lava plateau.
