Agate is a beautiful variety of quartz that occurs as concentric layers, usually of several colours. Each one is unique. How the rhythmic bands have formed is still not completely understood.

Agates from Morocco were first described in the 1940s but it is only recently that they have become popular with collectors.

This example is a cut slice of agate which has been polished on one side.
