The islands are composed of Tertiary igneous rocks, mainly granite and gabbro, and has spectacular sea cliffs. The islands represent the remnants of a long-extinct volcano.

This handbook from 1979 is a guide to all aspects of St.Kilda, with one chapter on the geology.
